Abstract
In 5 year and 7 month period of time(April 1963-October 1968) we noticed 109 cases of intussuception from a total of 100 patients examined, obtained the following results from the treatment of barium hydrostatic pressure:
1) Of the 109 cases, 89 cases (81%) were completely reduced and 14 cases of ileo-ileal or double intussusception were noticed among the 20 cases (19%) that failed. Therefore, only 5% of complete failure occurred from the ileo-colic type.
2) It was noted that the time passed from the onset of disease does not affect the progress of the presenting point of the intussuscepted portion nor was there any difference in the time required in the process of complete reduction.
3) As long as there is no complication, the length of time passed after the onset of the disease is not an indication of the selection of hydrostatic pressure treatment, and it should never be utilized as contraindication.
4) This occurred most frequently in children under the age of 1 (80%) and the ration of occurrence among sexes happens to be 4/1 (male to female).
5) As for the seasonal frequency, it is noted that it tends to rise at the epidemic season for upper respiratory and gastrointestinal disease, and there were only two cases in which we found solid etiology: aberrent pancreas and Peutz-Zeghers syndrome.
6) Main symptoms and signs were somewhat similar in other reports already submitted.
7) The rate of recurrence is 8.2% and the time of the recurrence var iesbut there was not a case of recurrence within a 24-hour period after the complete reduction.
8) The 3 cases (2.8%) who were failed by hydrostatic reduction and died after surgery were noticed in cases where the patient was either brought up to the hospital too late or already in critical condition at the time of admission.
9) Considering all the advantages and disadvantages of hydrostatic pressure treatment, we think it is recommendable as a primary method of treatment for intussusception that has not developed any complications.
